Concidering my theme for artslam this year is finishing things I decided make an art supply inventory to make sure I have everything I need. Apparently this is Hard Work. If I go m.i.a. before June please come dig me out from under all the stuff. In the mean time have a marker doodle I found in one of the sketchbooks.

A Lonesome Traveler- a charcoal drawing I had to do twice cause the fixative messed up the first version. Ouch.

Dear internet,

Today I started teaching myself Blender for the nth time. I have been at it for hours and I’m happy to report that the new wireless keyboard is doing it’s job, my shoulders are stiff but nowhere near what they used to be after this many hours. Awesome! I hope some of the stuff I learned will stick around till tomorrow, especially the part about putting things into ortho and at angles where I see what the hell I’m actually doing.

As proof I have included screen caps of today’s work, cause I haven’t gotten to the part about rendering yet. Also I’ve made all three at least two times over- one following the tutorial, the other going at it from memory… and if I messed up another time along the tutorial. Phew.

Here are the tutorials. I’ve been good, now can I please have a house elf to make me dinner before I topple over?

go give opinions:D

…and start thinking about this year’s concept(s). ;)

Today I Learned

that I need to put my dip pens safer outta the way, cause getting stabbed by one is really unpleasant.

Doodleblog: Refreshing my anatomy

In January I bought myself that other kind of tablet, discovered Zinio was already installed and promptly bought Imagine FX’s anatomy issue. I’d wanted it for a while, but the paper version just didn’t turn up anywhere I looked. Sadly the e-version doesn’t come with the disc content, but…

Always wanted to ask how you actually start doing the studies of anatomy and from what point (as in area of the body, etc)? :0

This took some heavy pondering, cause apparently I’ve never really thought about it. I’m one of those impulsive people that tend to dive head first into whatever interesting that comes along.

I took some time going through my sketch books starting with freshman year in high school, and boy is my knowledge about anatomy come in random ways over the years. I learnt the basic proportions and gesture drawing that year… then over the next five years (including two where I barely drew), there was stuff like copying anatomy book drawings the teacher decided on, some planes drawing, and life drawing.

Ever since my way of studying have tended to go something like this: if I see a tutorial that looks useful I might try that out, starting on page one. Or if something about my own drawing annoys me I might go straight for stuff related to that one thing. Say I have problems with feet, I’ll head to the books, tutorials or whatever draw and try to get some understanding from that. When I wanted my figures to become less stiff I looked for info from animators cause they’re mighty good at being not stiff. Admittedly this isn’t always the best way to go about things.

…which is why I decided to go through the entire thing in the anatomy issue. Now this Ron Lemen dude have a really great, not to mention logical, bunch of chapters. First one out was about different ways to construct the body, gesture and the importance not to get stuck in any one way. Then the chapters following are
-torso
-legs
-feet
-shoulders and upper arms
-lower arms
-hands
-head

The reason this structure is so good is because it centers in the torso… which really is the center of the body and is where all movement begins. I’m quoting from my head right now, so this isn’t exactly what he said but: shoulder decide the action of the upper arm, upper arm decides what the lower arm does, and the lower arm the movements of the hands.

I’m rambling, but hopefully there was some sense to it.

Edit: tumblr, why you no autoformat paragraphs?

Refreshing my anatomy

In January I bought myself that other kind of tablet, discovered Zinio was already installed and promptly bought Imagine FX’s anatomy issue. I’d wanted it for a while, but the paper version just didn’t turn up anywhere I looked. Sadly the e-version doesn’t come with the disc content, but beggars can’t be choosers or so they say. After flipping through it for some days I decided it was time to really use it for what it’s worth and so a plan to do 30 minutes of study five days a week unfolded…

First I’d read through the chapter the evening before starting, it went something like “gobblegook babble pronated lorem ipsum”.The morning after I reread the chapter and it now only went “gooky pronated lorem ipsum”, then I’d get to the drawing. Monday to Friday, give or take 30 minutes depending on how focused I’d feel, I got the study done. First day of drawing I had some left over paint on my watercolor palette so without really thinking I used it to outline the figure, it helped me spot mistakes and looked rather good so I decided to keep at it. Drawing through the chapter there wasn’t more gobblegook left. Then I’d start on the next one, reading and rereading.

Occasionally I’d miss a day or two, and hell, March I was kind of sick of it and ignored it for some weeks, but it was nothing I’d berate myself for… just sat back down and started at it again. There’s probably about two weeks left before I’m done with the human anatomy. Then there’s the one on animals which I’m gonna wait a bit before starting, need some shorter things to do for a while after this.

…but what?
