In January I bought myself that other kind of tablet, discovered Zinio was already installed and promptly bought Imagine FX’s anatomy issue. I’d wanted it for a while, but the paper version just didn’t turn up anywhere I looked. Sadly the e-version doesn’t come with the disc content, but…
Always wanted to ask how you actually start doing the studies of anatomy and from what point (as in area of the body, etc)? :0
This took some heavy pondering, cause apparently I’ve never really thought about it. I’m one of those impulsive people that tend to dive head first into whatever interesting that comes along.
I took some time going through my sketch books starting with freshman year in high school, and boy is my knowledge about anatomy come in random ways over the years. I learnt the basic proportions and gesture drawing that year… then over the next five years (including two where I barely drew), there was stuff like copying anatomy book drawings the teacher decided on, some planes drawing, and life drawing.
Ever since my way of studying have tended to go something like this: if I see a tutorial that looks useful I might try that out, starting on page one. Or if something about my own drawing annoys me I might go straight for stuff related to that one thing. Say I have problems with feet, I’ll head to the books, tutorials or whatever draw and try to get some understanding from that. When I wanted my figures to become less stiff I looked for info from animators cause they’re mighty good at being not stiff. Admittedly this isn’t always the best way to go about things.
…which is why I decided to go through the entire thing in the anatomy issue. Now this Ron Lemen dude have a really great, not to mention logical, bunch of chapters. First one out was about different ways to construct the body, gesture and the importance not to get stuck in any one way. Then the chapters following are
-torso
-legs
-feet
-shoulders and upper arms
-lower arms
-hands
-head
The reason this structure is so good is because it centers in the torso… which really is the center of the body and is where all movement begins. I’m quoting from my head right now, so this isn’t exactly what he said but: shoulder decide the action of the upper arm, upper arm decides what the lower arm does, and the lower arm the movements of the hands.
I’m rambling, but hopefully there was some sense to it.
Edit: tumblr, why you no autoformat paragraphs?
